Load-shedding: Practical steps to stay safe and prepared

Power cuts are part of daily life for many South Africans. When the lights go out, a few simple moves can save food, protect devices and keep your household running. This guide gives clear, practical actions you can use today—no tech jargon, no long lists you won't follow.

First, know your schedule. Eskom and most municipalities publish load-shedding stages and times. Download a reliable app (EskomSePush or the official municipal alerts) or sign up for SMS from your local provider. If your area changes unexpectedly, these tools will warn you.

When the power goes off: unplug sensitive electronics. Sudden surges when power returns can fry TVs, computers and modems. Leave essential lights or a single lamp plugged into a surge protector if you need light when power returns. Keep your fridge and freezer doors closed. A full freezer can hold temperature for about 24 hours; a half-full one for about 12. Avoid opening the fridge unless you must.

Charge phones and power banks ahead of scheduled outages. Keep one phone at 20–30% battery as a backup for calls and messages if others run low. A car charger works well if you need extra top-ups. Keep a simple power bank (10,000–20,000 mAh) ready for each adult—cheap insurance for emergencies.

Lighting: use LED torches or headlamps, not candles, for long-term use. Candles cause most home fires during outages. If you must use a candle, place it in a stable holder, keep it away from curtains and never leave it unattended. LED lanterns give steady light and last longer on batteries.

Basic emergency kit

Build a small kit you can reach in the dark: torch and spare batteries, a charged power bank, basic first-aid, bottled water, non-perishable snacks, a whistle, and a list of important phone numbers. Keep medicines and any medical devices that need power in a safe, easy-to-access spot. If someone in your home relies on medical equipment, register with your municipality as vulnerable so you get priority help.

Backup options and cost tips

Simple backups: a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) will keep a router and a fridge running for short outages. Inverters with deep-cycle batteries last longer and can run lights, a fridge and a few small appliances. Generators give the most power but need fuel and safe outdoor placement to avoid carbon monoxide risks. Solar panels with battery storage are a cleaner long-term option but need upfront investment.

Pick what fits your life. For many households, a good power bank, a UPS for essential electronics, and a basic inverter are the best mix of cost and convenience. If you work from home or have medical needs, invest more in reliable backup.

Finally, check your neighbours. Share schedules and tools. Community planning makes load-shedding easier for everyone. Keep your alerts on, prepare a small kit, and practice the few simple habits above—those actions make the biggest difference when the lights go out.

Eskom Faces Challenges as Stage 3 Load-Shedding Returns Amid Grid Woes

Eskom resumes Stage 3 load-shedding on February 22, 2025, after a 20-day pause, due to depleted emergency fuel reserves and power station disruptions. The resumption underscores persistent challenges in maintaining grid stability, with economic growth at risk. Despite setbacks, Eskom reports improvements in energy availability and continues to combat network issues like illegal connections.
