Ante Budimir: Who He Is and Why He Matters

If you follow European football, you’ve probably seen the name Ante Budimir pop up on match reports. The Croatian striker is known for his strong hold‑up play, aerial ability and a knack for finding the net in tight games. Born in 1991, Budimir grew up in a small town near Zagreb and spent his early years in Dinamo Zagreb’s youth system before chasing senior football abroad.

Club Career Overview

Budimir’s first real break came when he moved to Austria’s Wolfsberger AC in 2014. In just one season he scored 13 league goals, catching the eye of German scouts. That summer he signed with VfL Bochum in the 2. Bundesliga and helped them push for promotion, netting nine times.

A year later Hannover 96 snapped him up for a €4 million fee. At Hannover he became a regular starter, scoring 15 goals over two campaigns and earning a loan spell at Bayer Leverkusen in 2020 where he added three crucial strikes in the Champions League run.

In 2021 Budimir returned to Croatia on loan with Hajduk Split, rediscovering his scoring touch by hitting eight goals in half a season. The move proved vital for his confidence and led to a permanent transfer back to Germany with TSG Hoffenheim in the summer of 2022.

Since joining Hoffenheim, Budimir has been a key part of their attack, often rotating between centre‑forward and target‑man roles. He logged 28 Bundesliga appearances last season, contributing 11 goals and several assists. His physical presence lets teammates hold up the ball while he creates space for wingers to cut in.

International Impact

The Croatia national team gave Budimir his senior debut in March 2021 during a World Cup qualifier against Malta. He scored on his first appearance, instantly proving he could handle pressure at the highest level. Since then he has earned 15 caps and found the net nine times, including a crucial header in the Euro 2024 qualifying playoff that secured Croatia’s spot.

Budimir’s role for La Croatia is often as an impact substitute. Coaches love his ability to change a game late on – his height and timing make him dangerous from set pieces, while his work rate helps tighten up the defence when he drops deeper.

Looking ahead, Budimir should feature prominently in Croatia’s Euro 2028 qualifying campaign. If he stays injury‑free, expect him to add at least five more international goals before the tournament.

Overall, Ante Budimir blends experience, physicality and a reliable goal sense that makes him valuable for both club and country. Whether you’re watching Bundesliga action or an international fixture, his presence guarantees a chance of a big moment – be it a towering header, a smart tap‑in or a hard‑working run that opens up space for teammates.
